Type A and Money Savvy
Generation launch moneysavvygeneration.com
CHICAGO (20 February 2002) - Two women-owned Chicago
businesses promote financial literacy for Americas children.
In an effort to lend support to families and educators
committed to raising financially savvy kids, Type A Learning Agency
and Money Savvy Generation are pleased to announce the launch
of MoneySavvyGeneration.com. The new website provides parents,
educators, and grandparents easy access to innovative products,
curriculum, resources, and advice to help teach kids aged 7-12
about money basics.
According to a recent economic literacy survey, many
adults and teens lack understanding of even the most basic concepts
about money, and two out of three high school students tested
failed a quiz on basic economic principles (National Council on
Economic Education, 2000). Yet, Generation Y (ages 5 20)
spent $155 billion of their own and their parents money,
while twelve percent of 12-19-year olds hold a credit card in
their own name (U.S News & World Report, March 19, 2001).
As a private banker with 20 years experience in the
financial services field, Susan Beacham founded Money Savvy Generation
in 1999, because she became quite aware of the difficulty that
many people, especially women, have in grappling with the concepts
of personal financial management. As a financial professional,
I encountered so many people who were obviously uncomfortable
with what they didnt know about managing money. This just
seemed so unnecessary
money management should be as natural
as learning to read. But the more I tried to educate adults, the
more I saw that financial education needed to start much earlier
in life.
Through these experiences, Beachams calling
became clear: get into the elementary schools to teach Americas
children economic literacy at an early age. For the next several
years, Beacham worked tirelessly as a volunteer teacher in her
daughters school district teaching her 8-week curriculum
entitled Mrs. Money Talks Money. MoneySavvyGeneration.com,
the patented Money Savvy Pig, and its supporting curriculum,
Money Savvy Kids, all evolved out of this teaching experience.
According to Beacham, What makes the Money
Savvy Pig and the Money Savvy Kids curriculum unique
is the simple way they present their messages. The Money Savvy
Pig has four chambers, one for each of the choices that
children have when they earn or receive money Save, Spend,
Donate or Invest. The Money Savvy Pig gives them power over
the money in their lives, thus allowing them to transact in a
grown-up way, without feeling controlled.
The Money Savvy Kids curriculum is a completely
self-contained, 8-unit curriculum that requires no pre-work on
the educators part. It has received rave reviews from teachers
and students in the public schools where Beacham has taught.
Its such an honor to be a part of Susans
mission to raise financially literate children, said Anna
Belyaev, Type As CEO. Helping Money Savvy Generation
expand its curriculum and apply todays Internet technologies
to the task fits in well with our own companys commitment
to education and e-learning.
Moneysavvygeneration.com officially launched on January
31,2002, and can be accessed at http://www.moneysavvygeneration.com.
